Hey everyone,

Does anyone know if there's anywhere that you can find any of the sheet music for The Last Five Years online?  Preferably to download for free... but if not, even somewhere to buy a song or two?

Short ramble... [23 Mar 2007|08:36pm]

This is completely random, but I just watched The Last Five Years Original Cast on Google Video for the third or fourth time, and it just struck me today SO strongly.

Norbert is SUCH an amazing actor.

Seriously, though.  Most great Broadway names of the day...and actors in general...have a way of making everything they do...what's the word...actorish, really, if that makes any sense.  There's always a trace of this-isn't-really-me acting in some of the best of actors, just because it's so much easier than completely devoting yourself to a character.

But my god, watching Norbert is absolutely breathtaking...especially in Nobody Needs To Know.  Every single thing that he does is completely in character and completely realistic.  Jamie is a real person, not a character portrayed by an actor.  But the most amazing part in my opinion is near the end when he says "And nobody needs...to know..."  His face and eyes and voice are just goosebump-inducing in their power.  Honestly.

Heh.  Sorry.  Just had to get that out...because...it really made me happy.

Done now.

Lyric Parallel [10 Jan 2007|12:15am]

I just noticed that the line "You and you and nothing put you, miles and piles of you" appears in both I Can Do Better Than That and in See, I'm Smiling. I thought it was interesting that Cathy uses it first (chronologically) in I Can Do Better Than That to tell Jamie that she loves him as his and he doesn't need to change....yet when he does change, she uses it against him later in See, I'm Smiling. The same thing she wanted in the beginning later became the thing she resented. I just found it interesting, and quite consistant with Cathy's character.

Another subtle move by Jason Robert Brown to make L5Y one of the most lyrically beautiful and complex stories I know.

Name: Samantha, Sammy, Sam, anything like that.
Age: 16

How long have you been a fan of L5Y: About 4 months
Why do you love L5Y: It's just an absolutely fantastic show.  The music is stunningly beautiful, and the story makes up for its simplicity of events in the way teh story is told.  And it's wonderful, and I could (and can) listen to the cd over and over again and never be tired of it.  I could continue to ramble, but for your sake, I'll stop.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself: Hmm...well, I'm just another one of those musical theatre hopefuls, essentially.  I'm also addicted to Dr. Pepper and Chapstick.

I had a thought [15 Sep 2006|07:47pm]

[ mood | contemplative ]

Okay, think about the order of the songs as they should be. Cathy's audition problems ("Climbing Uphill") happen early in their relationship, before they're even married, when they're not having any real problems. Supposedly part of their marital problems is that Cathy is resentful of Jamie's success, but... I found a problem with that theory. Cathy's not really having any problems with her career at that point in their relationship. Okay, yeah, she's not happy about having to go to Ohio, but I think "A Summer in Ohio" she demonstrates that she can deal with it.

So, you ask, why won't Cathy go to Jamie's party then? Well, here's my theory...

In "A Miracle Would Happen," Jamie admits that he flirts with young women who come up to him and Cathy knows about it--"they always know." Is it not possible that Cathy is just sick of seeing her husband ditch her (in "I'm a Part of That" for instance, she's clearly alone and in some interpretations looks bored) and letting fangirls hang all over him?

Just a theory of mine. I have a lot about the show, actually... I intend to write up an analysis some day, 'cause I'm a relationship analysis geek. :D

My introduction [28 Jul 2006|04:57pm]

Name: Crystal
Age: 19
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
How long have you been a fan of L5Y? Since 2002. My friend (who got me into musicals in the first place) got me the recording as soon as it came out. He knew I'd love it and he was right.
Why do you love L5Y? The story telling of this particular show is so beautiful and tragic. I cry every time I listen to "Goodbye until tomorrow/I could never rescue you" becasue you're listening to Jamie say goodbye and all that and on the flip side, you hear Cathy so excited after their first date. It's heartbreaking. And come on, Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott? How could you not love them?
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself: I love musicals. Almost to the point that I'm addicted. Oh screw it. I'm addicted. LOL. I'm not professionally trained in singing or playing an instrument or composing or anything like that which I like. I like not having a trained ear because that I way I can just enjoy the shows without thinking "OMG, the score's terrible!" or "OMG, she's so technically bad!" Oh, I also like to make colour bars, icons, and Friends only banners so you'll probably see a few graphics from me from time to time.
